For those looking for the ultimate driving experience, come to Tenseness where the mecca of bike riders and sports car driver is located – The Dragon or Tail of Dragon. You may have seen much hyped curvy streets in Europe or other parts of the world but by all definition there is one street in US (yes you read it right, despite all state of art infrastructure, we at USA carry the mantle of most dangerous street in the world)
Tail of Dragon Road is famous and quite notorious at the same time. Famous as it is considered the mecca of bikers and every bike rider has a dream to cross the Tail of Dragon once in his lifetime. Why it is notorious then, well, every year there are so many deaths and uncounted number of accidents due the curvy nature of this road. However this still hasn’t deterred the motorist and till date the ‘Tail of Dragon Road’ is the top destination for motorcyclists and sports car enthusiasts. Also referred as “The Dragon” is a curvy stretch of Highway 129, running through Blount County and into North Carolina.
With no intersecting roads or driveways to interrupt a cruise, it has become idyllic for many drivers and especially motorcyclists, thousands of whom “ride the Dragon” each year. Just 11 miles of stretch but this dreaded street has 318 curves in such as short distance. With no stop signs or any other interesting cross streets all you have to do is pay attention to ongoing traffic if you want to RIDE THE DRAGON in one piece. The moment you loose your focus, you may end up being one in the hundreds of accidents happen at this stretch every year.
America’s number one motorcycle and sports car road. Designated US 129, the road is bordered by the Great Smoky Mountains and the Cherokee National Forest with no intersecting roads or driveways to hamper your travel. The most dangerous point along this stretch is at Deals Gap. See some of the horrible images users have captured.
Be careful at Deals Gap where the curve is unusually steep. There is no explanation why the street was built this way and why couldn’t the local government fix it. May be the bike riders oppose a slightest change to its structure given the fact that making it easy to drive will take out all the charm, all the thrill a daredevil rider can get. Local authorities too are aware of the thrill The Tail of Dragon offers to the bikers and drivers constantly in the search of adventure. May be that is making them aesthetic to significantly reduce the risks on this road. However many regulations have been enforced in recent past including prohibiting commercial vehicles and long trailers on this 11 miles stretch.
Until authorities take drastic steps to fill or detour some of the most dangerous spots on this stretch better avoid this death trap. For those who don’t care and want to experience trill of driving, Tail of Dragon always welcome daredevil bikers.
